Seems to me after sixteen years of being a guitar performer and teacher that one of the most useful advises for advance students are directed to non musical matters and more into high level performance topics like sports performers do, such as exercising the body, counting on what we eat, sleeping and resting after an intense practice.
This means that student focus should be on the big picture of training and not only on what topics are we training. In my case I have spend several years trying to find an excellent routine to practice over and over but every other month this routine will need a change of modification, could be to add something or to remove other subject. Leading me to just focus on my short term goals and medium term goals of my practice. This practicing routines will always need changes and to adapt to each new situation you are living. The issue that we can't see is that these cycles I mentioned are a long term cycles and requires many years to see the results.
There is a famous peak I have seen which is when students are on their best years or golden years in music similar to sports 15 years - 30 years old, this peak I mention is that even if students do not pay attention to the big cycles of the professional practice such as exercising the body, counting on what we eat, sleeping and resting after an intense practice, the body resist without much complaints all the long practicing hours but shouldn't be taken for granted or with ease. Consider your long term well being.
This is to mention to my friends and followers that in music is very common to have injuries, eating disorders, psychological disorders and many other more issues that could stop the performers careers or even take him/her to their limits and hospital.
Also many of these issues that musicians are facing being silent in order to not altered the musician's reputation or marketing public image.
See or analyse the performers careers and how many performers reach elder years and are still active performers, also what instruments they play?.
We are facing years of improving our capacities with technologies and with all available knowledge on the internet, so, we teachers should consider the long term well being of our students but always as advises or recommendations since is the family duty to provide these tools from an early year in children.
I hope you understand how difficult is for a teacher to talk about all of these subjects and advice them when students mindset is that they just want to play guitar...
