As a starting point to start learning strummings if we assign two actions to the right hand one action by articulating the bass note with the thumb action that we will call "bum" and then second action is by the rest of the fingers strumming downwards that we'll call "cha" if we learn this then we could easily repeat rhythms by ear and improve on a variety of styles and strumming patterns.
